Sorghum productivity is limited due to reduced soil fertility, traditional agricultural methods (mono-cropping), erratic rain fall, inesct-pest infestation, removal of crop residues, shortage of agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, seed, pesticides, farm implements, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt improved and sustainable technologies in order to guarantee improvements in productivity of sorghum.
Such technologies include the use of integrated soil fertility management practices (ISFM) which have intercropping cereals with legumes as one of its main components.Farmers traditionally practice cereal-legume intercropping with out incorporating agronomic interventions (appropriate rate of fertilizer and plant density, time of planting, spatial arrangement).
This is, therefore, this book deals with identifying the proper rate of N fertilizer and cowpea density under sorghum-cowpea intercropping to improve the yields of the intercrops as well as the productivity of the system at large.
The author, Berhane Sibhatu, was born in 1984 at Degua-Tembien woreda, Tigray, Ethiopia. He joined Hawassa University (the then Debub University) in 2002 and graduated with BSc Degree in Plant Sciences in 2006, and pursued his MSc.
